Popotla, MX Kasey L. Anderson B1 Andersen

After the New Year, Kasey's Gnomio was glad to get back to nature, and Popotla was just the place to do it. Popotla was a really tight-knit community with seafood restaurants adorning the sides of the cliffs and raw-meat booths scattered along the beach. Cars drive across the firm sand; daring tourists partake of the raw seafood cocktails that are freshly cut out of the shell.

Gnomio was unhappy about the starfish- he said it made him itchy.

1. A favorite place in Popotla is definitely the seafood restaurants and the beach.
2. A common natural disaster is flooding.
3. The common sport (like most Latin American countries) of course, is soccer.
4. Favorite Part? Washing out shells at the beach.

La Bufadora- Ensenada (B1 Mr. Anderson - Kasey Anderson)

Despite all of his experience traveling, Teran forgot to report back for duty and got lost among my things. Thankfully we found him, but when we traveled to Ensenada, we brought Gnomio with us instead. Here is his first pose among the mountains.

His favorite part was the Bufadora, which usually fires about every minute and a half. This one went about 25 feet high!
Then we walked around to the shops. Gnomio was very unimpressed with the fact that the panflutes couldn't be played. He called it "tourist junk."

1. A favorite place to go in Ensenada is definetely La Bufadora.
2. The most common natural disasters are flooding and earthquakes.
3. A favorite part is the cliffs and scenery.
4. A commonly played spot is soccer.

Dear Stephanie,

Your Geo Gnome has traveled to Las Vegas. Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada. Residents are attracted to this metropolitan area because it is a tax haven because of the profits made by gambling. The casino industry promotes gambling that attracts tourists and service workers from all over the world who speak many languages. English is still, however the language most spoken. Many consider the Las Vegas area with its fantastic hotels and resorts and its proximity to the Grand Canyon to be one of the seven wonders of the world. The grand resort hotels often follow a theme. For example, the Eiffel Tower is part of the Paris Hotel. New York is reproduced on a smaller scale complete with a roller coaster and theme park atmosphere. Movie, circus, Egyptian, and Mardi Gras themes try to encourage tourists to visit certain hotels. The Excalibur Hotel has a medieval knight theme and features family favorites such as free puppet shows, contortionists, and magicians but there is much to offend conservative values in many downtown areas because of the vices that are advertised and readily available. Animals such as white tigers and lions are exhibited in display areas and featured in magic shows. Famous singers, dancers and other kinds of entertainers perform at hotels. Restaurants offer world-class cuisine and variety in their menus. Amusement park type rides are also available to attract patrons. The city has sports teams such as college football that are well attended. Because of the desert climate temperatures are generally hot and dry though sometimes very windy and water conservation is a concern. Much of the vegetation is maintained by irrigation such as the fancy hedges and palm trees and only plants that require low water such as cactuses are native to the area.

Little Italy-San Diego (B1 Mr. Anderson - Kasey Anderson)

Teran recently visited San Diego, but he felt a little Italian when he woke up and insisted we travel to Little Italy.

Little Italy is a district in San Diego with many little shops. Teran liked it a lot, especially the glass shop and fragrance shop.

Let it snow, let it snow! Here is Teran standing next to the only snowman in California!

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, geognomes sitting in the flowers...

1. A favorite place to go in San Diego is little Italy.
2. The most common natural disasters are earthquakes, floods, and fires.
3. A favorite part about California is the beach and the sunsets.
4. A common sport in California is volleyball.

Dear Stephanie,

Your Geo Gnome has gone to Florida, a populous state in the southern part of the United States. Miami is the second largest city in Florida and it is located 26 degrees North and 80 degrees W. Miami is known as a metropolis area on the move. Its international airport is one of the busiest in the nation. Its port serves both passenger and cargo ships from many countries, and its first railroad track was laid down over 100 years ago. Miami is the United States gateway to the Caribbean and South America. A large Hispanic group lives in southern Florida—the Cubans. Immigration accounts for much of the area’s diversity with 40 percent of the population hailing from Cuban. Therefore the city has a distinctly Latin flavor. Many Cubans have settled in the Miami area since 1960, after the communist takeover of their homeland with the leadership of dictator Fidel Castro. One area of Miami is populated by a Cuban majority. “Little Havana” is the part of the city where Cuban restaurants offer food such as comidas an criollas and Spanish-language television and radio stations reflect Cuban heritage. Illegal immigration from Cuba continues to occur because of the restrictions placed on its people and the close proximity to Florida. Latin dancing is part of the Cuban culture that is shared with their new community. Tourism helps the economy. Tourists flock to Florida to see beauties like pink flamingos and the Florida Everglades. Other creatures include alligators and dolphins and visitors and natives love to go on boats and watercraft hoping to see them. Tourists also come to experience the joys of Disney World and Epcot Center, Sea World, Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Center, etc. Drawbacks include high humidity, hurricanes, and frequent fires in the everglades.

Butch goes to California!

Butch visiting Carmel, California and the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Carmel is a quaint beach town, kind of touristy. The homes there don't have numbers, they have names. Pebble Beach is a gated community that is sparsely populated with very large homes. Both places are south and west of Utah. The food is much the same as Utah, but since it's on the coast, there are a lot of restaurants serving fish. It has a mild climate and the people there speak English.

A Gnome in Shanghai, China [Courtney Maxfield (Anderson)]

Geo George is over looking a part of Shanghai, China which has 20 million people.
Here he's at the Mag Lev train which goes 420 Kilometers per hour.

Shanghai is the financial center of China and also considered the most modern city in China.

Like Vietnam, there is no major religion in China because of the communist government.

A Gnome in Saigon, Vietnam [Courtney Maxfield (Anderson)]

Geo George is looking out over the fast developing city of Saigon, Vietnam.

Here, he's in the lobby of a hotel listening to traditional Vietnam music.

Saigon is the business center of Vietnam so all kinds of activities are available. Many tourists like to shop because everything is very cheap.

There is no major religion in Vietnam because the communist government promotes atheisism.

This city is a mix of new buildings and old buildings because it is growing very fast. The streets are filled mostly with motorcycles. And its tropical in Saigon with lot of palm trees.

Gnome in Michigan!

My brother-in-"law" is going to "law" school in Michigan. It's too cold to go outside (at least for my sister). She decided to take the picture of my gnome, Bob, with her daughter once she started sleeping in her crib.
Question 1: Are there any mountains where you live?

"I live in Michigan and there are not any mountains. At least not like Utah. The so called 'mountains' here are just hills."

Question 2: How do people treat their environment?

"The people here recycle bottles, pop cans and plastics. They are very environmentally friendly."

Uchtrey came to Anchorage, Alaska Our city has 278,000 inhabitants. The
largest of any town in AK we have 2/5 of AK's population. The city is
squashed between the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains and the Cooke
Inlet. We have some snow (not as much as usual) and cooler temperatures
(20's-30's). Anchorage has a subarctic climate due to its short, cool
summers. Average daytime summer temperatures range from approximately 55 to
78 degrees Fahrenheit ; average daytime winter temperatures are about
5 to 30 degrees. We average about 19 hours of sunlight in the summer
and in the winter we only have about 5 hours of sunlight. We have all
kinds of foods represented here in AK. Although the tourists like to try
local game and seafood.....moose, caribou, dall sheep, bear, salmon,
King crab, halibut, etc. As we are vegetarian, we prefer to feast upon the
varied berries and wild mushrooms. The Matanuska Valley (just 30 mins
north of Anchorage) grows the world's largest cabbages, pumpkins,
squashes, etc as a result of our midnight sun. My husband is a
geophysicist/geologist. He travels around Alaska doing environmental clean up. He
has also studied sea ice out of Barrow, AK (the northern most tip of AK).
I am a housewife and take care of my kids. We do a lot of camping,
hiking, kayaking, biking, climbing, etc during the summer. In the winter
there are all sorts of skiing (downhill, cross country, skate, alpine
touring, telemark, etc.). There is a lot of ice skating, sledding, ice
hockey
, dog mushing, ice climbing, snowshoeing and snow machining.
